MORLEY ST BOTOLPH WAR MEMORIAL

The Morley war memorial stands on the Deopham Road opposite the school and is in the form of a Cornish granite Celtic wheel cross with a tapering shaft mounted on a plinth with a one-stepped base. There are 9 names listed for World War 1 and 8 for World War 2. The memorial was unveiled in May 1920 and dedicated by the Bishop of Norwich.

BARKER

Claude Henry

Private 21368 Claude Henry Barker was born in Great Yarmouth c1898. He enlisted in the 8th Border Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and died of wounds on 11th July 1916 aged 18. He is buried at Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension Grave I. E. 26.and is remembered on the Morley and Wymondham War Memorials. He was the. son of A. G. and B. Barker, of London Road, Suton, near Wymondham and was a resident of Wymondham.

DOUGLAS-WILLAN

William Howard (Sholto) Stanhope

Captain William Howard (Sholto) Stanhope Douglas-Willan enlisted in the 2nd South Staffordshire Regiment. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 17th February 1917. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 7B and on the Morley War Memorial. See also Charterhouse School, Godalming, Surrey.

There is a brass plaque dedicated to him inside the church:

DOWNES

Horace

Corporal 3/8232 Horace Downes was born in Besthorpe c1872. He enlisted in the 1st Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 5th June 1915 aged 43. He is buried at Sanctuary Wood Cemetery Grave IV. E. 35 and is remembered on the Morley War Memorial. He was the Husband of Anna E. Downes, of Wicklewood.

GOODRUM

Jabez John

Private 20044 Jabez John Goodrum was born in Wattisfield c1898. He enlisted in the 7th Northamptonshire Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 17th August 1916 aged ~18. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 11A and 11D and on the Morley War Memorial.

PLOWRIGHT

Sidney

Private 20570 Sidney Plowright was born in Morley St Botolph. He originally enlisted as 17951 in the Norfolk Regiment in Norwich then later transferred to the 1st Essex Regiment. He was drowned en route Gallipoli on the Royal Edward on 13th August 1915. He is remembered on the Helles Memorial Panel 144 to 150 or 229 to 233 and on the Morley War Memorial. He was a resident of Morley St. Botolph.

SEMMENCE

Ellis John

Private 47704 Ellis John Semmence was born in c1886. He enlisted in the 2nd Welsh Regiment in Wymondham. He served in France & Flanders and died from wounds received in action at Paschendaele on 17th November 1917 in No.1 Canadian General Hospital, Etaples, aged 31. He is buried at Etaples Military Cemetery Grave XXX. L. 20A and is remembered on the Morley War Memorial. He was the son of Ellis John and Eliza Semmence, of Morley St. Botolph; husband of Eva Gertrude Semmence, of Morley St. Botolph and was a resident of Attleborough.

Frederick

Private 15002 Frederick Sowells was born in Colchester. He enlisted in the 9th Norfolk Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action on 15th September 1916. He is remembered on the Thiepval Memorial Pier and Face 1C and 1D and on the Morley War Memorial.

THROWER

Christmas John

Lance Corporal 47738 Christmas John Thrower was born in Norwich c1894. He enlisted in the 2nd Welsh Regiment in Norwich. He served in France & Flanders and was killed in action at Vadencourt on 15th September 1918 aged 24. He received the Military Medal (London Gazette 12 June 1918, page 7015). He is buried at Vadencourt British Cemetery, Maissemy Grave I. B. 17 and is remembered on the Morley and Wymondham War Memorials. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. R. E. Thrower, of Morley and a resident of Wymondham.

THROWER

Edward Robert

Private G/10189 Edward Robert Thrower was born in Heigham c1893. He originally enlisted as 14228 in the Norfolk Regiment in Wymondham then later transferred to the 1st Middlesex Regiment. He served in France & Flanders and died on 17th June 1915 aged 22. He is buried at Wimereux Communal Cemetery Grave I. J. 1A and is remembered on the Morley and Wymondham War Memorials. He was the son of Robert Edward and Hannah Elizabeth Thrower, of Suton, Wymondham.
