Married in 1909 to Florence Clarke in South Lynn (Kings Lynn). Enlisted for three years, on the understanding that he would serve the balance of 12 years as a reservist or, if hostilities broke out, for the balance of 12 years plus one year. He served from 30 December 1905 to 29 December 1908. Recalled to the colours in August 1914, initially to the 6th Division's 38 Brigade at Athlone, Ireland but was immediately posted to 12 Brigade as a driver, also in Ireland. He was officially overseas from 8th September 1914, when his qualification period for the 1914 Star began. He served from 17 February 1916 as a Driver with 5 Brigade Ammunition Column, then from 11 April 1916 as a Driver with 64 Battery Royal Field Artillery and finally from 26 January 1918 as a Gunner with 64 Battery, 5 Brigade Royal Field Artillery.
