THETFORD WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is to be found on the Thetford town market place. It takes the form of an octagonal column on top of which is a column with a cross pomme finial on the top all of which rest on a stepped base. Each section of the memorial is alternately either polished or unpolished the polished sections being one step the plinth the shaft and the cross. The main front facet of octagonal plinth has the seal of Thetford (castle surrounded by words “Antiq burgh de Thetford”) with inscription underneath. The memorial was unveiled 4th December 1921 by Major General Sir Charles V F Townshend. There are 116 names for World War 1, the names for World War 2 appear on the rear of the memorial (these two sets of have yet to be transcribed).
