EAST RETFORD WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 & Korea - Detailed Information
Compiled and Copyright © Chris Comber 2010

The East Retford War Memorial is to be found in Retford Market Square in the form of a memorial cross with a two-stepped base surmounted by four stage plinth, shaft and Eleanor Cross that embodies the characteristics of a Roman milestone with the inscription on the top three stages of the plinth. The World War 1 names are carved onto stone tablets, designed by Leonard W. Barnard (of Cheltenham), built by R.L. Boulton & Sons and unveiled 14 September 1921 by Sir Frederick Milner, dedication by The Venerable The Archdeacon of Newark, Egbert Hacking. The World War 2 names (not yet transcribed) are on bronze plaques, unveiled and dedicated on 6 May 1951, with a further rectangular bronze plaque with Korea inscription in raised lettering (not yet transcribed) unveiled and dedicated 17 August 2008. There is also a memorial in the north transept of St. Swithin's Church, Gainsborough Road, East Retford, in the memorial chapel which is in the form of nine oak boards and also an elaborately carved, and partially glazed, wooden screen with metal plaque.
