Batu Gajah, Malaysia

Little Acre

This is a very special cemetery where many local Police Officers, Planters. Miners and Commonwealth troops that died during the Malaysian Emergency (1948 - 1960) are interred. A special memorial takes place on the second Sturday in June to remember all of those who fell at the hands of the communist insurgents during that terrible period of Malaya's history. For possibly more information about individuals listed here see the Malaysia Commonwealth Deaths Post WW2 searchable database on this site.

The Cemetery at Batu Gajah is called God's Little Acre after the memorial cross erected by The Perak Planter's Association and others to commemorate the Communist Emergency 1949-1960.

The memorial inscription can be seen opposite it reads:

ERECTED BY
THE PERAK PLANTER'S ASSOCIATION
AND
OTHER WELL WISHERS
IN MEMORY OF ALL THOSE
WHO LIE AR REST IN GOD'S LITTLE ACRE
PIONEERS, PLANTERS, MINERS
POLICE AND THE MILITARY
MANY OF WHOM GAVE THEIR LIVES
WHEN DEFEATING COMMUNIST INSURGENCY
1948 - 1960
WE SHALL REMEBER THEM
17 JUNE 1989

At the gate to the cemetery stands a Roll of Honour to those killed during the emergency that are buried in Little Acre.
Three planters were killed initially which sparked off the emergency. They were Allison, Christian and Walker who were murdered at Sungai Siput on 16th June 1948.
Many graves to the servicemen, police and planters can be found in God's Little Acre. The Commonwealth War Graves Commission maintaining the graves. This particular stone marks the grave of Peter D Fordham, Marine, R.M. 8250, 45 Commando R.M. 25th September 1951. Aged 20.
Several buildings still stand from the days of British rule. The Court House opposite stands by the hospital and the Governor's Residence.
Batu Gajah prison is still in operation today after many years. During the second world war the Japanese used this as an interrogation block. Notably Lim Bo Seng was held, and died, here. His body was buried nearby and later exhumed to be buried with honours in Singapore.

BURIED IN LITTLE ACRE
