In
an article in The Straits Times after the war, written by Chan Cheng
Yean, the only survivor of that particular massacre who got back
to Malacca, he writes that: “On the 11th Feb, 42 the men
who were left to guard the camp areas were sent to the battle line
at Bukit Timah Road. Capt. Todman was the Officer commanding the
"B" Chinese Company. Through orders from him we took our
fighting positions at Cluny Hill".
Later in the article he writes: “On the evening of the
second day at about 8 o'clock our positions were heavily shelled
by the enemy. They were fired from howitzers and trench mortars.
During the shelling Wee Jim Swee and Pte.Lew Geok Fah were killed.
News that these two volunters were killed was confirmed by Capt.
Cho Siow Lim. At 10.30pm on the same night Capt. Todman and Pte
David Lee came and told us that Capt. Cho Siow Lim was killed by
a direct hit from a mortar shell; after that on the same night Pte.Gan
Kim Wah was also killed.” |
