Philosophe Cemetery, Mazingarbe, France

Photographs Copyright © Lynda Smith 2002

This Cemetery is situated in the town of Mazingarbe, near Lens.

Nearly 2000 graves are to be found here including 250 war casualties who could not be identified. After the Armistice, a number of isolated graves from the Loos battlefield were brought here.

As can be seen from the photos, this is an industrial area. There are many slag heaps from coal mines, and the chemical industry is very important. Nonetheless, as with all the Commonwealth War Commission Cemeteries, it is beautifully kept and a haven of peace in a busy world.
