THE TAIWAN PRISONER OF WAR MEMORIALS

During World War 2 the Japanese builtm prisoner of war camps on the island of Taiwan (Formosa). The Taiwan POW Camps Memorial Society remenbers those who died here during that time and there are a series of memorials that have been erected. The Taiwan Prisoner of War Memorial Wall
- located in the Taiwan POW Memorial Park on the site of the former Kinkaseki POW Camp, the 56 foot (17 meter) wall containing the names of over 4350 Allied POWs who were held in Taiwan from 1942-45 was dedicated in November 2011

The POW “Mates” Sculpture
- a sculpture showing two POW mates struggling and helping each

The Taiwan / Kinkaseki POW Memorial
- erected on the site of the former Kinkaseki POW Camp, Jinguashi and dedicated in November 1997

The Taihoku Camp 6 POW Memorial
- erected on the site of the former Taihoku #6 POW Camp, Taipei and dedicated in November 2011

The Karenko POW Memorial
- erected on the site of the former Karenko POW Camp, Hualien and dedicated in November 2012

The Kukutsu POW Memorial
- erected on the site of the former Kukutsu POW Camp, Hsintien and dedicated in November 1999
- later re-located on the site and re-dedicated in May 2004

The Shirakawa POW Memorial
- erected on the site of the former Shirakawa POW Camp, Bai He and dedicated in November 2013

The Taichu POW Memorial
- erected on the site of the former Taichu POW Camp, Taichung and dedicated in November 2000

The Heito POW Memorial
- erected on the site of the former Heito POW Camp, Ping Tung and dedicated in November 2004

The Toroku POW Memorial
- erected on the site of the former Toroku POW Camp, Douliou and dedicated in May 2009

The Taiwan Hellships Memorial
- erected in the War & Peace Park, Chijin Area Kaohsiung and dedicated in January 2006
The memorial is dedicated to all those who suffered and those who died on the notorious “hellships”
in and around Taiwan waters during World War II.

The Taihoku Prison Memorial
- erected on the wall of the former Taihoku Prison, Taipei and dedicated in June 2009
The memorial is dedicated to all the Allied airmen who were captured and held –
and the 14 who were executed, in the Taihoku Prison in World War II
