GREAT TEW WAR MEMORIAL

The war memorial is to be found on the North wall of the North aisle in St Michael and All Angels Church, Great Tew, Oxfordshire. The memorial is in the form of an ornate, rectangular, stone tablet with the inscription in gold painted lettering with an additional tablet at the base for that has been appended to list the World War 2 names that are also in gilt lettering with gilt and green painted, foliate, column borders on three sides of the tablet; at the top of the memorial are two gilt painted angels that support a shield with the cross of St George on it with a green painted wreath at the top of the tablet. There are 9 names listed for World War 1 and 3 names for World War 2.

HARTLEY Frederick George
Corporal 13833, 19th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Killed in action 13 September 1919 in Russia. Born Southam, Warwickshire, enlisted Banbury, Oxon. In the 1881 census Frederick G Hartley was aged 8, born Little Tew, Oxfordshire, a scholar, son of Charles and Harriet Hartley, resident Little Tew Village, Little Tew, Chipping Norton, Oxfordshire. In the 1901 census he was aged 28, born Little Tew, Oxfordshire, a Gardener, married to Sylvia Hartley with one son, wife born Great Tew, resident Appendix Street, Mountfield Gardens, Southam, Warwickshire. In the 1911 census he was aged 38, born Little Tew, a Jobbing Gardener (Domestic), married to Sylvia Hartley with two sons and a daughter, wife born Great Tew, resident Mountfield Gardens, Southam, Warwickshire. He was buried in buried Svyatnavolok Chyd but is commemorated in MURMANSK NEW BRITISH CEMETERY, Russian Federation (North). Special memorial B11.
KNIBBS George Herbert
Private 17112, 2nd Battalion., Hampshire Regiment formerly 18188, Oxfordshire and Buckinghahsire Light Infantry. Died on service 8 November 1916. Attested 26 July 1917 in Toronto, Canada, aged 33 years 7 months, height 5 feet 10 inches, chest 33-38 inches, medium complexion, brown eyes, dark brown hair, religious denomination Presbyterian. [Listed as Squadron Leader on memorial] Flight Lieutenant (Pilot) 41553, 211 Squadron, Royal Air Force. Killed in action when it is believed he was to have been shot down by a Japanese AF Ki-43 during an attack on Mingaladon airfield, Rangoon, Burma, flying a Beaufighter TFX, serial number NE540, flying out of Chiringa, India, 18 October 1944. No known grave. Commemorated on SINGAPORE MEMORIAL, Kranji War Cemetery, Singapore. Column 431.
