HEADINGTON
BOER WAR MEMORIAL
Boer War - Roll of Honour
with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Chris Comber 2006
The
Boer War Memorial originally stood in St Clements, Oxford, was moved
to Headington and now to Abingdon. The memorial is dedicated to the
142 men of the 1st Battalion Oxfordshire Light Infantry who died in
the war. It was unveiled by the Bishop of Oxford on 19th September 1903
in the former churchyard of St Clement's Church (now the site of the
Plain roundabout). It was removed to Cowley Barracks in the 1950s, then
in the 1960s to the Territorial Army Centre at Slade Park in Horspath
Driftway, Headington and subsequently in 2009 to the Territorial Army
Edward Brookes Barracks, Abingdon. It lists the 33 men killed in action
and the 109 men who died of disease. The memorial is listed by those
who were killed in action and those who died through disease, within
this the list is by rank and then alphabetical. For ease of searching
the names have now been sorted into alphabetical order for this page.
