The War Dead of Newport are commemorated on two rectangular brass plaques inside the Memorial Hall, West Street. The names are entered in two columns. The 1st World War plaque is surmounted by a coat of arms with the inscription Pro Patris Mori while the Second World War plaque has the coat of arms of the Barony of Cemais. The hall was officially opened on 26th September 1923 by the Mayor F.W. Withington; the foundation stones having been laid on 1st January 1921 by J.O. Vaughan and Dr Havard. There is also a framed plaque, naming all men from the Parish who served King and Country in the Great War, which hangs in St. Mary’s Church.

Captain 2nd Battalion Grenadier Guards (Special Reserve) Killed in action on the Somme on 15th September 1916 aged 26. Son of Sir Marteine Owen Mowbray Lloyd, 2nd Baronet and Lady Katharine Helena of Bronwydd, Henllan, Cardiganshire. Born at Bronwydd in 1890 and educated at Lyndhurst and Eton. After his death the government made the estate liable to succession and death duties insisting that Captain Martin Lloyd had succeeded to the estate.- [see ‘The Lords of Cemais’ - Dillwyn Miles] Buried in DELVILLE WOOD CEMETERY,LONGUEVAL FRANCE Plot XV1. There is a marble plaque in the Lady Chapel at St Mary’s Church dedicated to:-

Captain James Beaumont Stanley Alderson of The Irish Regiment youngest son of Samuel and Caroline Alderson. He fell mortally wounded while gallantly leading his men in the victorious assault upon Bethlehem in S. Africa July 7th 1900. He served also in the operations of the N.W. Frontier of India 1897-98 for which he received the medal and clasp. Born July 1st 1869 died July 8th 1900. God giveth us the victory through Jesus Christ.
