RHAYADER, POWYS WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Detailed information
Compiled and Copyright © Martin Edwards 2004

The memorial is in the form of a lock tower in the centre of Rhayader. For more information about the building of the memorial and its history see the Exhibition Rooms, Rhayader. The memorial covers Rhayader and district and stands in East Street, Rhayader at the juntion of the A470, A44 and N4518 on the Town Square. The memorial takes the form of Tower with pavilion roof with a small gothic-arched, the louvres bear the cross. The upper part of the memorial has a tapering tower with a clock on each face; the lower part has engaged Doric columns to the corners and open pediments, containing figures, supported on cornices above the inscribed panels recording name of the fallen. The carved figures include a soldier (west), winged female figures (peace) and a Welsh dragon defeating a German eagle (east). There are 88 names listed for World War 1 and 20 for World War 2. The memorial was first unveiled 18 September 1924 by Lord Ormathwaite and rededicated 7 November 1948 by local dignitaries and clergy. The memorial cost £1,200 to erect from public subscriptions; the sculptor was Mr Benjamin Llloyd. Mary Ann Lewis presented the clock to the town in memory of her late husband Evan.
