ALNESS
& WEST ROSSKEEN WAR MEMORIAL
World
War 1 & 2 - Detailed information
Compiled and Copyright © Russell Edwards 2024
The
memorial is to be found on the Obsdake Road and High Street junction
in Alness, Ross and Cromarty. It takes the form of a large red sandstone
Celtic cross on sandstone plinth with the inscription carved in to
the shaft of the Celtic cross and the names around the sides of the
base plinth. The memorial was initially dedicated by the Rev. John
MacLeod, Dornoch, padre of the 4th Seaforths, and unveiled by the
Right Honourable Robert Munro on 14 September 1921. There are 85 names
for World War 1, 25 names for World War 2, and one for the Northern
ireland Conflict (The Troubles). The memorial was steam cleaned in
2026 and rededicated 10 September 2016. A new memorial that duplicates
the names on the old memorial was unveiled 6 November 2022 in the
Garden of Remembrance. The memorial lists surname, name or initials,
service number, battalion and regiment. See the Ross
and Cromarty Website for details of the Alness War Memorials.

[Transcribed
as A M MACMILLAN] Private 244384449, Queen’s Own Highlanders.
Fatally injured in an IRA remote control booby trap explosion
in Crossmaglen village square whilst on patrol on July 7, he
died the next day in Musgrave Park Hospital, Belfast, 8 July
1979. Aged 19. He had been in Northern Ireland for only two
days. Native of Evanton, Ross and Cromarty. Educated at Dingwall
Academy.
Extract
from Hansard, Volume 970, Monday 16 July 1979:
Shortly
before 11 a.m. on Saturday, 7 July, an explosive device placed
behind the front door of a derelict property in Market Square,
Crossmaglen, detonated as a four-man Army patrol was passing.
One soldier sustained serious injuries and another was slightly
injured. Both men were flown to hospital in Belfast, where the
more seriously injured man died on 8 July. The device was detonated
by radio control, a technique which has been used by terrorists
in the past. The origin of the components used in the device
is unknown. The Provisional IRA has admitted its guilt for the
murder and police inquiries aimed at apprehending those responsible
are continuing.
