EMPINGHAM WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorial can be found in the Empingham Cemetery, west of Empingham, on the Whitwell Road (A606), Empinhgham. It takes the form of a simple Latin cross made of stone (clipsham) on an octagonal pillar and square plinth which has a three stepped plinth. The memorial was designed by Messrs Traylen & Lenton, of Stamford and made by Belton & Goddard, of Stamford. It was unveiled 11 November 1920 by Lord Ancaster, the benediction WAS by Rector Rev'd. T.W. Owen. The memorial was rededicated 1 November 2010 by Rev. Stuart Mitchell and Mr. Peter Baker. There are 17 names for World War 1 and 4 names for World War 2. These names are replicated on a memorial within St Peters Church, Church Street, Empingham in the form of two rectangular boards; World War 1 above and World War 2 below, with decorative fleur de lys at the top and gilt roses at the lower edge of World War 1 board.

Sapper 146549, 87th Field Co. Royal Engineers. Killed in action at Arras 8 May 1917, aged 21. Born Thorpe Satchville, enlisted Stamford. Baptised 9 December 1895 in Twyford, leicestershireson of Mary Allen. Son of Mrs. W. Fowler, Great Casterton, Rutland. In the 1911 census he as aged 15, born Thorpe Satchville, Leicester, a Prentice to wheelwright, resident Shaklewell Cots, Stamford, Empingham, Tickencote, Rutland . Private PO/7549, H.M.S. ‘Good Hope’, Royal Marine Light Infantry. Lost his life in action at the Battle of Coronel, off the Chilean Coast, 1 October 1914, aged 36. Born 19 August 1878 in Empingham. Son of John and Isabella Brown, Empingham, Rutland. In the 1881 census he was aged 2, born Empingham, Rutland, son of John and Isabella Brown, resident Empingham, Oakham, Rutland. In the 1891 census he was aged 12, born Empingham, Rutland, a scholar, son of John and Isabella Brown, resident Main Street, Empingham, Oakham, Rutland. In the 1911 census he was aged 34, born Empingham, Rutland, a Private, Royal Marine Light Infantry, billetted at R.M. Barracks, Forton Alverstoke Gosport, Alverstoke, Hampshire. No known grave. Commemorated on Portsmouth Naval Memorial, Hampshire. Panel 6.

Charles Henry

Private 203875, 1st Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment. Killed in action 3 November 1918. Born Somerby, Lincs, enlisted Coalville. Baptised 1 February 1891 in Empingham, son of Sarah Ann Chamberlain. In the 1911 census he was aged 20, born Empingham, Rutland, a Waggoner on farm, lodging at Exton Road, Empingham Tickencote, Rutland. No known grave. Commemorated on Vis-en-Artois Memorial, Panel 4.

[Transcribed from memorial as HAMMAND] Private 202537, 1st Battalion, Leicestershire Regiment. Killed in action 30 November 1917, aged 37. Born Ely, Cambs, enlisted Loughborough, resident Stamford (Empingham), Lincolnshire; husband of Mary Jane (nee Brown) Hammond, Mill Lane, Empingham, Stamford, married 5 June 1912 in Empingham, Rutland. In 1901 he was aged 19, born Ely, Cambridgeshire, a Horsekeeper on farm, boarding at North Bank, Whittlesey Rural (Isle of Ely), Whittlesey, Cambridgeshire. Buried in Flesquieres Hill British Cemetery, Nord, France. Plot VIII. Row I. Grave 1.

Rifleman C/12654, 11th Battalion, King’s Royal Rifle Corps. Killed in action 9 February 1917, aged 23. Born Market Overton, enlisted and resident Empingham, Rutland. Baptised 3 June 1894 in Market Overton, son of Henry Amos and Lucy Hibbitt. Son of the late Henry and Lucy Hibbitt. In the 1901 census he was aged 6, born Market Overton, Rutland, son of Henry A and Lucy Hibbitt, resident The Hall, Market Overton, Oakham, Rutland. In the 1911 census he was aged 16, born Market Overton, Rutland, a Farmers son working on farm, grandson of Josiah (a widower), resident Main Street, Empingham, Stamford, Tickencote, Rutland. No known grave. Commemorated on Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Panels 13A and 13B.

He lived at Normanton Park (before the creation of Rutland Water). In the 1891 census he was aged 5, born Normanton, Rutland, resident The Hall, Normanton, Oakham, Rutland.
