QUARFF WAR MEMORIAL

The Quarrf war memorial is to be found at the local parish kirk, Quarff. There are only names listed for World War 2. The memorial takes the form of an arch affixed to the side of the kirk made in stone and recessed inside is a plaque containing the names of those who gave their lives. There are seven names listed.

Erected by the people of Quarff in loving memory of those belong to this district who made the supreme sacrifice in the War 1939 – 1945.

DAVIDSON Andrew
Private 2886411. 1st Battalion, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders) Died 1st July 1944, aged 28 years. Son of William and Laura Davidson of Quarff, Shetland Islands. Commemorated Bayeux War Cemetery. XXIV.D.8.
JOHNSON William
Lance Bombardier 896784. Royal Artillery. Died 6th June 1940, aged 23 years. Son of William and Margaret Johnson of Quarff, Shetland Islands. Commemorated Quarff Churchyard.
MALCOLMSON Alexander

MANSON Alexander
Able Seaman, Merchant Navy. SS ‘Benlomond’ (Leith). Died 24th November 1942, aged 31 years. Son of Adam and Catherine Manson of Quarff, Shetland Islands. Commemorated Tower Hill Memorial. Panel 16.
NICOLSON William
Sailor, Merchant Navy. SS ‘Jose de Larrinaga’ (Liverpool). Died 7th September 1940, aged 20 years. Son of Thomas and Elsie Nicolson of Lerwick, Shetland Islands. Commemorated Tower Hill Memorial. Panel 59.
TAIT John
Chief Officer, Merchant Navy. SS ‘Scottish Trader’ (London). Died 6th December 1941, aged 34 years. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Tait of Gremista, Shetland Islands. Brother of Thomas Tait. Commemorated Tower Hill Memorial. Panel 94.
TAIT Thomas
Ordinary Seaman, Merchant Navy. SS ‘Scottish Trader’ (London). Died 6th December 1941, aged 34 years. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Tait of Gremista, Shetland Islands. Brother of John Tait. Member of Pharmaceutical Society. Commemorated Tower Hill Memorial. Panel 94.
