Information kindly supplied by Graham Duncan (below):

James Duncan

Tank Corps,

James was born in 1885 in Huntly Aberdeenshire, the son of a Police Constable (James) and domestic servant (Anniebella) and enlisted in the army as a boy soldier on 22 Jan 1900, his age on attestation is 18 but in reality, he was 3 years younger. He joined the 13th ‘Lilywhite’ Hussars and saw action in the Boer War, notably at the siege of Ladysmith. He also spent a number of years in India, before returning home to live in Moele Brace with his wife Maggie and adopted son Gordon.

He left the army in 1912 and took an occupation as a Post Office clerk and telegraphist. On the outbreak of war, he enlisted in a local regiment, the Shropshire Yeomanry where he acted as a machine gun instructor. He applied for an officer’s position and was duly (despite his advanced age of 33) accepted. It is no coincidence he applied for active service shortly after his brother’s death in France.

He joined the new Tank Corps, and after training was sent to France where he arrived shortly before the armistice. The battalion war diary shows several officers and men reporting sick on a daily basis, and it was ill fortune that men who survived the war were to die in their beds of influenza. James was sent home on ‘conducting duties’ but had to report sick at Prees Heath military hospital, where shortly after his return to home, he succumbed to the Spanish Flu, aged 35.

He is buried by the ancient church in Mortlach cemetery in Dufftown, next to his parents.

James and his brother Gordon’s names are remembered on the Inveravon War memorial outside the old police station at Ballindalloch, where their parents lived during the war years.
