SHREWSBURY RAILWAY STATION WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is located in Shrewsbury Railway Station on Platform 3. It takes the form of a bronze plaque with two carved figures on either side of the list of the fallen. It is dedicated to those men working for the London and North Western Railway and Great Western Joint Railway working out of Shrewsbury. The words “Roll of Honour” are surrounded by a laurel wreath, on one side is a base relief of a soldier and on the other a sailor. There are 42 names listed for World War 1. The memorial was unveiled by the Marquis of Cambridge and dedicated by the Bishop of Hereford on 7th April 1923. It cost £288 and was designed by Mr Sidney Hunt. Details appeared in the Wellington Journal & Shrewsbury News.
