WAR MEMORIAL
World War 1 & 2
- Detailed information
Compiled and copyright © Martin Edwards 2021
The
memorial is located at the junction of Station Road and Queen's Road,
Whitchurch, Shropshire. It takes the form of a white, Hollington stone,
obelisk on a square base with the names of the men inscribed upon it.
The ground is enclosed by a stone wall with entrances from each street
and laid out with trees and shrubs. The architect was Mr. W. Webb. The
memorial was unveiled 11 November 1920 by Rev. Sydney Dugdale. There
are 158 names for World War 1 and 40 for World War 2.

WHITCHURCH.
WAR MEMORIAL UNVEILING.—The handsome war memorial,
erected at a cost of £1,200, is now practically completed, and
the unveiling ceremony took place on Armistice Day. The site on Station-road
is a commanding one, and the monument itself very suitable, consisting
of a 7-feet square base surmounted by a white stone obelisk some 25
feet high. On the front, in gilt lettering, is the inscription: “In
proud and grateful memory of the men of Whitchurch who have their
lives in the great war, 1914-1918.” “Faithful onto death.”
There are 152 names of officers and men. A brief united service was
held in the Parish Church, where Nonconformist ministers took part,
probably
for the first time. A procession was formed
at the church gates. At the memorial great crowds had gathered. The
unveiling ceremony was performed by the Rev. Sydney Dugdale, for ten
years rector, whose own son's name was among those on the stone. Hymns
were sung and “The Last Post” sounded, and then numbers
of magnificent wreaths were laid on the base of the memorial, and
the ceremony ended with a hymn and the National Anthem.
