BATH WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 & Post WW2 - Detailed information
Compiled and Copyright © Terry Morgan 2008

CIVILIANS

Note (1) Service Personnel who died during the Bombing of Bath. Initially the Bath War Memorial covered only service personnel connected to Bath this included Home Guard, Police and ARP both on and off duty and also some visiting service personnel eg those on leave. When the civilians killed during the Bath Blitz were added to the memorial service personnel were excluded on the basis that their names already appeared in the separate lists. There are many exceptions to both of these rules. This policy results in various anomalies – eg fathers separated from children, some personnel being in the service listing even though the Commonwealth War Graves Commission rates them as civilians some servicemen are not mentioned on either list. To attempt to rectify this I have shown additional entries for service personnel killed in Bath with a note against their names

Note (2) Most of the people in the Civilian list were killed during the Bath Blitz which comprised three raids on the night of 24/25 and 26 April 1942. Much smaller numbers of people were killed in other raids in January and April 1941 – these were not targeted raids but raids of opportunity by aircraft which had failed to find their assigned targets.
