TRULL WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial is in the form of a stone cross with three stepped base surmounted by a square plinth, shaft and lantern cross standing in All Saints Churchyard. The memorial contains lettered stone panels and a bronze plaque and is enclosed by metal railings.

1914 - 1918

CLATWORTHY

Hugh Eland

Private 43564. 4th Special Reserve Battalion, South Staffordshire Regiment. Died 3rd October 1918. Aged 19. Born Trull, enlisted Taunton. Son of Eland and Mary Clatworthy, of Cutsey, Trull, Taunton. Buried in NIEDERZWEHREN CEMETERY, Kassel, Hessen, Germany. Plot I. Row G. Grave 7.

CLATWORTHY

Thomas Eland

Lieutenant, Indian Army Reserve of Officers attached to 37th DOGRAS. Died 6th January 1916. Aged 30. Son of Eland and Mary Clatworthy, of Cutsey, Trull, Taunton. No known grave. Commemorated on BASRA MEMORIAL, Iraq. Panel 43 and 65.

Note: The Dogra Regiment traces its ancestry primarily to three Regiments of the East India Company’s Bengal Army. These three Regiments were the 37th, the 38th and 41st Regiment of Bengal Infantry.

Acting Corporal 45772, 36th Battaery, 33rd Briagde, Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds 5th May 1917. Born Wilton, enlisted Taunton. Buried in PERONNE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, Somme, France. Plot V. Row M. Grave 16.

FUDGE

William Henry

Private 202688, 2nd/4th Battalion, Prince Albertís (Somertset Light Infantry). Killed in action in Egypt 18th December 1917. Aged 32. Born and resident Trull, enlisted Taunton. Son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fudge; husband of Elizabeth Fudge, of 22, Thomas St., Rowbarton, Taunton. Native of Taunton, Somerset. Buried in RAMLEH WAR CEMETERY, Israel. Plot/Row/Section G. Grave 58.

Sapper 21370, 152nd Field Company, Royal Engineers. Died of wounds 18th October 1917. Born Exeter, enlisted Taunton. Son of Fredrick Robert and Mary Gamlin, of Sherford, Taunton, Somerset; husband of Annie Gamlin, of 2, The Goss, St. Michael's Rd., Minehead, Somerset. Buried in OUTTERSTEENE COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION, BAILLEUL, Nord, rance. Plot II. Row A. Grave 4.

Private 17048, 8th Battalion, Prince Albertís (Somertset Light Infantry). Killed in action 1st July 1916. Aged 19. Born Trull, enlisted Taunton. Son of John and Mary Griffin, of Harper's House, Fuell (sic - Trull), Taunton, Somerset. Buried in GORDON DUMP CEMETERY, OVILLERS-LA BOISSELLE, Somme, France. Plot III. Row P. Grave 10.

Henry Dennis

Captain, 2nd Battalion, 7th Gurkhas attached 1st Battalion, 9th Gurhka Rifles. Died 18th April 1916. Aged 24. No known grave. Commemorated on BASRA MEMORIAL, Iraq. Panel 55 and 67.

[Listed as Harry HOSKING on SDGW and CWGC] Private 21739, 9th Battalion, Prince Albertís (Somertset Light Infantry). Died in United Kingdom 27th April 1916. Born Stoke Cannon, Devon, enlisted Taunton, resident Trull. Buried in POOLE CEMETERY, Dorset. Reference: 10. C. 10115.

Captain, 5th Squadron, Royal Flying Corps and 3rd Battalion, Prince Albert's (Somerset Light Infantry). Killed 28th October 1915. Aged 22. Son of Arthur Edward and Mina Newton, of Trull, Taunton, Somerset. Buried in LIJSSENTHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY, Poperinge, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Plot I. Row A. Grave 32.

WIGGINGTON

[Listed as WIGGINTON on SDGW and CWGC] Sapper 2243, 3rd/1st Wessex Field Company, Royal Engineers. Died in United Kingdom 29th December 1916. Aged 36. Born Illston-on-the-Hill, Leicestershire, enlisted Taunton. Son of the late John and Annie Wigginton, husband of Annie Laura Wigginton, of 5, Glencoe Terrace, Trull, Taunton. Born at Melton Mowbray. Formerly Private (TR4/32714) 65th Training Reserve Battalion. Buried north of the church in ALL SAINTS CHURCHYARD, TRULL, Somerset.

[Listed as William Walter on SDGW and CWGC] Private 27737, 7th Battalion, Prince Albert's (Somerset Light Infantry). Died of wounds 22nd August 1917. Aged 25. Born North Newton, enlisted Taunton, resident Bridgwater. Son of Walter Winslade, of 17, Court, High St., Taunton, Somerset. Formerly Trooper 1136, West Somerset Yeomanry. Buried in WIMEREUX COMMUNAL CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Plot II. Row R. Grave 4.

1939 - 1945

ESCOTT

Hugh Fredrick Charles

Able Seaman D/JX 151408, H.M.S. Glorious, Royal Navy. Died 8th June 1940. Aged 19. Son of Harold and Dorothy Mary Escott, of Taunton, Somerset. No known grave. Commemorated on PLYMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Devon. Panel 37, Column 3.

Note: HMS Glorious was built by Harland & Wolff, laid down on 1st May 1915 and launched th April 1916. She was commissioned in January 1917. Subsequently, she was converted to become an aircraft carrier between February 1924 and March 1930. She was sunk on 8th June 1940 by gunfire from German battlecruisers Scharnhost and Gneisenau while covering the Allied withdrawal from Norway.

Private 5194041, 5th (Scottish) Battalion, Parachute Regiment, Army Air Corps. Died 17th August 1944. Aged 19. Son of Mr. and Mrs. C. J. Fouracre, of Trull, Somerset. Buried in MAZARGUES WAR CEMETERY, MARSEILLES, Bouches-du-Rhone, France. Plot 4. Row C. Grave 2.

LENTHALL

Reginald James

Aicraftman 1st Class, 1301641, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 4th November 1941. Aged 21. Son of William A. H. Lenthall and Rosla A. Lenthall. of Trull. Buried in ALL SAINTS CHURCHYARD, TRULL, Somerset.

MOTT, DSC

David Roger Oakley

Lieutenant, H.M. Submarine Usurper, Royal Navy. Died 12th October 1943. Aged 25. Son of Roger John Kynaston Mott and Helen Ginevra Mott; husband of Sheila Margaret Mott, of Ringwood, Hampshire. Awarded the Distinguished Service Cross (D.S.C.). No known grave. Commemorated on PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Panel 72, Column 3.

Note: HMS Usurper was a U Class Submarine,pennant P56, built by Vickers Armstrong (Newcastle-on-Tyne) and Davey Paxman and Ricardo. Laid down 18th September 1941, launched 24 September 1942, commissioned 2nd February 1943. Most likely depth charged in Gulf of Genoa by the German UJ-2208/Alfred. HMS Usurper (Lt. D.R.O. Mott, DSC, RN) had left Algiers on 24th September 1943 with instruction to patrol of La Spezia. On 3 October 1943 she was ordered to move to the Gulf of Genoa. No further contact was made and she failed to return to Algiers on 12 October 1943 as expected. The German anti-submarine vessel UJ-2208 reported attacking a submarine in the Gulf of Genoa on 3 October 1943 and it is believed that this may have been the Usurper. The date of his death and the date of the sinking do not match.

Sergeant (Navigator) 1318335, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 7th March 1943. Aged 21. Son of Cecil Douglas and Anna Alice Rae; husband of Emma Grace Rae, of Ottery St. Mary, Devon. Buried in ALL SAINTS CHURCHYARD, TRULL, Somerset.
