Able Seaman J/1925, Royal Navy. HM Submarine G9. Died 16/09/1917. Age 25. Son of Ann Smith of Bramfield Street, Halesworth and the late William Smith. Commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial. On 9th September 1917, HM Submarine G9 was on patrol in the North Sea searching for a German submarine believed to be in the area. While on the surface, G9 fired a torpedo at what was believed to be a submarine, but was in fact, a British destroyer HMS Paisley. The torpedo missed, but G9 was rammed and sunk by the destroyer |
