BURY ST EDMUNDS BOER WAR MEMORIAL

Boer War Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © 2004 Martin Edwards & Russell Edwards

The memorial itself stands in the Market Square, Cornhill, Bury St Edmunds. The memorial lists the names by the various corps they died fighting with. For ease of reading and research this list has been sorted into alphabetical order. There are 193 names listed and these include the Suffolk Regiment losses, 8 officers and 147 N.C.O.'s and men. The memorial takes the form of a bare-headed soldier, of Suffolk reference, with a rifle, leaning on a rock which is mounted on a rectangular sarcophagus. The memorial was uneviled on 11th November 1904 by General Lord Methuen and dedicated 12th November 1904 by The Venerable H Hodges. The memorial cost £750 to erect, the mason being Mr A H Hanchet and the sculptor Mr Arthur G Walker. Details appeared in a special supplement to the Bury & Norwich Post, 22nd November 1904.

Note: Details of the Suffolk Regiment in the Boer can be found under the Regiments section.
