At the outbreak of war the battleship HMS Vanguard formed part of the 1st battle squadron at Scapa Flow. She took part in the Battle of Jutland as part of the 4th Battle Squadron, from beginning to the end and did not suffer any damage or casualties. But her service was cut short when she blew up at Scapa Flow on the 9th July 1917 (about 10 pm) it is thought due to spontaneous ignition of her Cordite. From her crew of 823, 804 were killed |
