Marine PO/X 2701, Royal Marines – HMS Berwick. Died 25/12/1940. Age 20. Son of Walter and Emily Elizabeth Broom of Grundisburgh. Commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. The Gibraltar based Royal Navy Fleet, known as Force H, sailed on Christmas Day 1940 to support a Middle East troop convoy (WS 5A). The German heavy cruiser, Admiral Hipper, was engaged by the fleet and driven away from the convoy. During the action, HMS Berwick received a hit from an 8- inch shell causing some damage and a few casualties – including Marine Broom. |
