PEASENHALL WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The Peasenahll war memorial can be found outside the parish churchyard and takes the form of a Celtic cross on a two stepped base with a bronze plaque. They contain the names of 26 men who gave their lives during World War 1 and 5 in World War 2. The memorial was unveiled 26th June 1921 by Lieutenant-Colonel F W Turner.

SAWYER

Arthur Daniel

Aircraftman 1st Class 1425860, 21 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 24/12/1942. Age 19. Son of Frank Edward and Alice May Sawyer of Peasenhall. Buried at Calcutta (Bhowanipore) Cemetery. At the time if AC1 Sawyer’s death, 21 Squadron were flying Lockheed Ventura, operating out of Methwold. On 6th December, 21 Squadron was one of the squadrons which made the daring low-level attack on the Phillips radio and valve factory at Eindhoven. how this equates to AC1 Sawyer’s burial in Calcutta is unknown.

Flight Sergeant 1335635, 423 Squadron, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Died 13/11/1943. Age 20. Son of Lily Stiff and stepson of George Pearce of Peasenhall. Commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial. Formed at RAF Station Oban, Scotland on 18 May 1942, 423 General Reconnaissance Squadron, Royal Canadian Air Force, soon re-deployed to RAF Station Castle Archdale, Northern Ireland, flying Short Sunderland.

Captain 137391, 6th Battalion, Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry. Died 07/03/1945. Buried at Taukkyan War Cemetery, Burma

Frederick Penrose

Lieutenant, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. HMS Dunluce Castle. Died 07/07/1941. Age 28. Connection to Peasenhall unknown. Buried at Dunfermline (Douglas Bank) Cemetery. HMS Dunluce Castle was a depot ship anchored in Scapa Flow. her many duties included storing ships, providing temporary accommodation for crew waiting their ships and housing survivors from the Russian convoys
