World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The Saxtead war memorial is in the form of a roughly hewn Latin Cross with a two-stepped base. There are seven names for World War 1 and three for World War 2. The original memorial dedication was 4th July 1920 by Canon R Abbay. Details appeared in the Suffolk Chronicle and Mercury 9th July 1920.

Private 4107, 3rd/4th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment. Died 05/05/1916. Age 20. Buried at Saxtead (All Saints) Churchyard. Private Cook’s death is recorded at Berkhampstead

Stoker 1st Class K/33394, Royal Navy – HMS Ettrick. Died 03/09/1917. Age 26. Son of Alfred and Ellen Goddard of Perry's Farm, Saxtead. Buried at Gillingham (Woodlands) Cemetery.

HMS Ettrick was a Destroyer and part of the Home Fleet based at Chatham. On 3rd September 1917, Chatham Naval Barracks were bombed by the Germans and a naval dead were subsequently buried at Gillingham’s Woodlands Cemetery
