Sgt Lewendon RAFVR 1608368 was the son of Frederick and Nellie Elizabeth
Lewendon, of Guildford, Surrey. In May 1944, after completing his
training as a Flight Engineer, Sgt Lewendon was posted to 576 Squadron
RAF at RAF Elsham Wolds with the rest of his Lancaster Crew. At
the age of 20, Sgt Lewendon was killed on his 25th operation, while
enroute to Frankfurt on Lancaster ME854, UL-D2. Sgt Lewendon was
initially buried at Gundersheim and now rests in Rheinberg Cemetery.

1258617 40 Squadron Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. He died on
24 October 1941, aged 20. Son of Arthur Douglas and Violet Alice
Paine, of Guildford
On 24 October
two flights comprising 16 aircraft redeployed from Alconbury to
Luqa in Malta. James Paine was the pilot of Wellington X 9912 which
ran out of fuel and ditched in the Mediterranean North of Sicily.
In addition
to the crew of six, there were four passengers on the flight. One,
Leading Aircraftman R M Wade, was washed ashore unconscious on the
coast of Sicily and became a prisoner of war. The body of Sergeant
Hewitt, one of the Wellington’s air gunners, was also washed
ashore and is buried in Catania War cemetery.
Sergeant Paine
was reported as missing in The Times of Saturday 15 August, 1942.
James
Paine and the seven other missing airmen are remembered on Panel
50 of the Runnymede Memorial. |

He
was born on 14 May 1916 to Albert Edward and Susan Puttock, of Onslow
Street, Guildford. Husband of Edwina Puttock.
He
was appointed as a Clerical Officer at Scotland Yard on 7 May 1935
and stayed there until called for duty with the Royal Air Force
Volunteer Reserve on 2 September 1939.
At
the time of his death on 8 October 1943 he was serving as Flight
Lieutenant (Air Gunner) 108948, attached to C Flight, No. 20 Operational
Training Unit.
On
8 October 1943 Wellington X3662 took off from Lossiemouth on a navigation
exercise transitting Penrhos, Carlisle, Macduff and return to Lossiemouth.
The crew comprised Flight Sergeant G F Smith (RCAF), Flight Sergeant
E M Anderson (RCAF), Pilot Officer A W Howl (RCAF), Flight Lieutenant
J A Puttock and Sergeant W J Sadler. At about 0600 the aircraft
crashed off Dunvegan Head on the NW side of Skye.
The
Times of 9 December 1943 carried a report that he was Missing, Believed
Killed on Active Service.
Pilot
Officer Howl is buried in Lerwick and Sergeant Sadler in Trondheim.
Flight Sergeant Smith, Flight Lieutenant Puttock and two other crew
members are remembered on Panel 120 of the Runnymede Memorial. His
name also appears on the Guildford war memorial. |

at Rabaul, death recorded as Beri Beri and Malaria but also as Dysentery.
Aged 27. Born 8 June 1944, and resident, Surrey. Son of Albert Alfred
and Blanche May Welford; husband of Sylvia Ann Welford, of Knightsbridge,
London, formerly 29, Conder Court, Guildford, Surrey, married in
1939. No known grave. Commemorated on SINGAPORE MEMORIAL, Kranji
War Cemetery, Singapore. Column 3. |
