Ashurst is a hamlet on the B1235 to the West of Henfield. The war memorial takes the form of a small stone cross in the churchyard of St James' Church, Churfh Lane, Ashurst, containing 10 names with one initial for World War 1, On the front of the memorial are recorded the names of those who lost their lives in World War One. The names of the three who died in World War Two are recorded on the side panel. It was created by Carrara Works (Stone Carver).

Private 5367, 11th Battalion, The Royal Fusiliers. 18th Division. Taken prisoner and died in captivity in Germany 31 May 1917. Aged 28. Son of John & Caroline Dumbrell of New House, Church Lane, Ashurst. Born in Ashurst & enlisted in Chichester. Buried in Hamburg Cemetery, Germany.

Private G/50009, 23rd Battalion, The Middlesex Regiment. 41st Division. Killed in action during the March Retreat 24 March 1918. Aged 25. Son of William & Jane Dumbrell of Rose Cottage, Ashurst, later of Partridge Green. Born in Ashurst & enlisted in Chichester. Commemorated on The Arras Memorial MR.20

Private 28439, 10th (Prince of Wale’s Own) Royal Hussars. 3rd Cavalry Division. Killed in action. 13 May 1915. Aged 32. Son of Mr. & Mrs. Kimmens of Starker’s Cottages, Ashurst. Husband of Mrs. Amy Mable Kimmens of Orford Cottage, Gordon Road, Shoreham. Served in the South African Campaign. Born in Clare, Suffolk and enlisted in Hove. Included on Shoreham Parish Church War Memorial. Commemorated on The Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium MR.29.

Private G/878, 8th Pioneer Battalion, The Royal Sussex Regiment. 18th Division. Killed in action near Montauban 1 July 1916. Born in Ashurst and enlisted in Horsham. Possibly the H. Lelliott on Brighton War Memorial. Commemorated on The Thiepval Memorial Mr.. 21

Sergeant Service No 976524. RAF Volunteer Reserve, 53 Squadron. The son of Revd Robert Forster Ashwin and Lucy Maud Ashwin of Bexhill-On–Sea. He died 4th February 1941 aged 32, and his name is commemorated on the Runnymede Memorial
MUSSELL Charles Edward
Leading Seaman. Service No P/KX 81824 Royal Navy. He was the son of Thomas & Louisa Mussell and the husband of Olive Mussell. Charles died 1st September 1940 aged 26 aboard HMS Esk. His name is commemorated on the Portsmouth Naval Memorial. His name also appears on the Steyning Memorial.
PEACOCK, MM Ernest George
Lance Corporal. Service No 6402589. Royal Sussex Regiment, 1st Battalion. He was the son of Ernest & Ellen Peacock of Partridge Green, Sussex. He died 19th February 1944 aged 24. Ernest is buried at the Cassino War Cemetery, Italy.
