Erected by officers and men of the First Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment in 1888, it is located at Old Steine, Brighton. It commemorates comrades who died of wounds and disease in the Egyptian campaign of 1882 and the Nile river expedition of 1884-5 which tried to relieve General Gordon at Khartoum.

Charles Stephen John
Sergeant. Charles Stephen John Brightwell was born 1847 in Oxford, and died before 1885. He married Lydia Dodson 1870 in Colchester, Essex, daughter of William Dodson and Hannah Marshall. She was born 1851 in Gorlestone, Norfolk, and died 26 Feb 1926 in Ipswich Mental Hospital, Suffolk.

This was the trunk he travelled with on the expedition.
