additional information David Coward

Chichester City War Memorial covers the years 1914-19 and 1939-45. The memorial is to be found in The Litten Gardens, St. Pancras Road, Chichester. There are 351 Surnames and initials, grouped by Regiment, (not all accurate) recorded below in alphabetical order. Those included on the local Church Memorials of St. Pancras, St. Bartholomews, Westgate, St. Georges Rumboldswhyke, Southgate Methodist Shippams and Graylingwell Hospital are mentioned, as are the men of the redundant Church of Portfield Memorial. , which can now be found in St. Georges, Rumboldswhyke. Four stone tablets added recently bear the names (surnames and initials) of 255 men who were lost in WW2. The memorial was moved in November 1940 from Eastgate Square due to alterations to the road layout. The memorial stands in a paved area and takes the form of a stone cross with foliated ends, surmounting a stone plinth that has an ornate, extended, stone cruciform base. Each of the four extensions of the cruciform base is surmounted by decorative stone conicles. The whole stands on a stone base which bears the sixteen stone panels that are inscribed with the names and the inscription. The memorial was dedicated by the Dean of Chichester and unveiled by Field Marshall Sir William Robertson July 1921.

A further stone cross memorial stands in Chichester cemetery bearing the names of 68 men who die din in World War 1 and 86 in World war 2. Takes the form of a large stone cross in the style of a CWGC cross with an inset bronze sword on the east face and a bronze oak leaf wreath placed at the base of one side of the cross shaft. The whole is set on a three stepped octagonal plinth with the names of the fallen engraved on it; the plinth is set on a two stone steps. This was dedicated and unveiled 11th March 1920.

Extract from Chichester Observer - 7 June 1916, page 4:

YOUNG CICESTIMAN'S DEATH.—News reached Chichester on Monday of the death of Mr. Charles L. Liautard, of 47, Broyle Road, and formerly in the employ of the Brighton and Hove Electric Light Company, at Chichester. Deceased, who was serving with the French Army, was killed during the severe fighting on Hill 304 to the north east of Verdun on April 18th. The letter conveytng the news of death states that deceased was a splendid soldier, one of the best shots in the regiment, and very popular among his comrades. The regiment to which he belonged was known as the "Iron Regiment" owing to the determined spirit it has displayed at Verdun, and only recently had the unique honour for a regiment of being awarded the Legion of Honour. Prior to his departure from Chichester a few months ago to join his unit in France, the young man—he was 22 years of age—was presented with a wrist watch by his colleagues at the Electric Light Works. Madame Liautard, the mother of the deceased, who is a member of an old Chichester family. has two other sons serving, one in the French Army, and the other in the Royal Fusiliers.
