IPING AND CHITHURST WAR MEMORIAL

This memorial is to be found in the newer Church of The Good Shepherd of Iping. There is nothing much left in the mouldering ruin of the old Church at Chithurst, not even the bats will live there. There are 16 names recorded on the carved wooden shrine on the East Wall. There are two burials in Iping Churchyard, neither are recorded on the Memorial.

Private 1794, 2/5th Battalion, The Hampshire Regiment. Indian Army. Died in India 21 September 1916. Aged 24. Born in Eastbourne and enlisted in Petersfield, Hants. Buried in Trimulgherry Cantonment Cemetery. Commemorated on The Madras Memorial, Chennai Mr. 66

Born in Linch, and enlisted in Portsmouth. Included on Linch War Memorial. Buried in Serre Road No 2 F 1890/2

Corporal 51306, Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds 5 October 1917. Born in Croydon and enlisted in Woodbridge, Suffolk. Awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal (D.C.M.). Commemorated on The Tyne Cot Memorial, Belgium MR 30 (This is the only Francis Duley [with this spelling] with CWGC)
