There
is a memorial to the Brighton and Hove Gas Company's Portslade Works
which was unveiled by the Bishop of Lewes that can be found on Shoreham
Harbour Eastern Wall of No. 1. Retort House, Portslade Gas Works, Portslade
by Sea, Hove, East Sussex. It takes th form of a nowy headed bronze
plaque on a granite backing with an incised cross between dates at the
top. There are 51 names listed for World War 1 only, newspaper reports
that fifty names were commemorated.

IN
MEMORY OF THE FALLEN
TABLET
UNVEILED AT PORTSLADE
A
memorial to fifty employees of the Brighton and Hove General Gas Co. who
fell is the Great War war was unveiled at the Portslade Worts on Saturday,
in the presence of about 500 people.
The
memorial which is placed on the eastern wall of No. 1 Retort House, is
a tablet designed in bronze and granite, with the initials. "B.H.G.G.C."
engraved at the top. Immediately below is a cross and on the left is the
Brighton Coat of Arms, whilst on the right the Coat of Arms for Hove is
shown. The names of the fallen are registered in three neat columns and
at the foot of the tablet are the words, "Their name liveth for ever
more."
The
service was conducted by the Bishop of Lewes, and Mr. A M. Paddon (chairman
of the directors of the company) performed the unveiling ceremony. Many
members of the staff were present, and in an enclosure near the memorial
were Mr. G W. Carey (deputy-chairman), Sir Charles Morgan, Mr. F. H. Jones,
and Mr. P. W. Colley (directors), Major P. A. S. Crawley, and others.
After
the service, which commenced with the singing of "O God our help
in ages past." Mr. Paddon proceeded to unveil the memorial, and gave
a remarkable address.

From the Staff.
Among
the numerous wreaths placed around the memorial were the following: From
the chairman and directors of the Brighton and Hove General Gas Co., to
the honourable memory of fallen comrades, from fellow workers. Portslade;
in memory of those who gave their lives in the Great War, 1914—1918,
from the Clerical and Technical Staff, Portslade Works; in proud and grateful
memory, Distribution Department, Works Section; in ever grateful remembrance,
Distribution Department. Clerical staffs.
The
r relative's of the fallen men were afterwards entertained to luncheon
by the company. A photograph of the memorial appears on page 5. (see above)
