TERWICK WAR MEMORIAL

St. Peters Church Terwick is situated in National Trust Property about 200 yards south of the A 272 between Rogate & Trotton. No signs of other habitations. Difficult to find. There are just six men recorded on the small stone tablet in the Church, one of whom is buried in the Churchyard.

1914-1919

BOXALL

Horace

Rifleman 3628, 2nd Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corps. 1st Division. Regular soldier killed in action on the Aisne 30 September 1914. Born in Terwick and enlisted in Gosport. Commemorated on The Ferte Sous Jouarre Memorial MR. 15.

HALL

Hersey

Private 9638, 14th Battalion, Hampshire Regiment. 39th Division. Killed in action on Beaucourt Ridge on the Somme 3 September 1916. Aged 19. Son of George Henry and Harriett Elizabeth Hall of Fyning. Born in Cocking & enlisted in Portsmouth. Commemorated on The Thiepval Memorial MR.21.

HODGES

Dennis

Private G/1729, 2nd Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 1st Division. Died of wounds 13 July 1917. Aged 26. Son of Mr Hodges & Mrs L.Hodges of Terwick Common. Born in Trotton and enlisted in Rogate. Buried in Coxyde Military Cemetery, Belgium B.24.

KNIGHT

Alec James

Lance Corporal PLY/15196, 1st Royal Marine Battalion, The 63rd Royal Naval Division. Killed in action 23rd March 1918. Commemorated on The Arras Memorial MR.20.

MASLIN

George

Lance Corporal G/551, 7th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 12th Division. Died of wounds 26 November 1917. Aged 33. Son of Mr Maslin & Mrs Emma Jane Maslin of Ivy Cottages, Terwick Common. Born in Linch and enlisted in Midhurst. Grave lost. Commemorated on The Cambrai Memorial MR.17.

SIMMONDS

George Alfred

Sergeant 1361, 2nd Battalion, Kings Royal Rifle Corps. Died at home after the war 1 August 1919. Aged 39. Son of Robert and Sarah Simmonds. Husband of Mrs Laurie Lizzie Simmonds of Terwick Common. Born at Terwick Common. Veteran of The South African War and the Great War. Buried in St.Peters Churchyard Terwick.
