Tillington is a hamlet to the west of Petworth, on the edge of Petworth Park. Wiothin All Hallows Church are two brass tablets, by the pulpit, containing the 29 names of the fallen for World War 1. The names are listed with surname and one christian name. A further seven names are recorded on a stone tablet in the High Street, below the church.

Son of Henry & Mary Bailey of Tillington, later of 3, Osbrook Cottages, Kempshott Road. Born in Chichester and enlisted in Petworth. Horsham Buried in Tyne Cot Cemetery, Passchendaele, Belgium.

Basil Herbert (Bt)

Major, 2nd Battalion, Grenadier Guards attached Royal Flying Corps. Killed in action 18th May 1915. Aged 30. Son of Lt. Col. Brackley Herbert & Ellinor Frances Barrington-Kennett of Onslow Gardens, South Kensington. Husband of Rhoda Violet Cecil Barrington-Kennett of Remenham, Wraysbury Bucks. Educated at Eton. Included on Eton College Roll of Honour. Buried in Le Touret Military Cemetery, Richebourg L’Avoue.

Victor Annesley

Major, No 4 Artillery Observation Squadron, Royal Flying Corps. (BE2C’s) Formerly with the Grenadier Guards. Killed in action 13th March 1916. Son of Lt Col Brackley Herbert & Ellinor Frances Barrington-Kennett of Onslow Gardens, South Kensington Educated at Eton &Balliol College Oxon. Included on Eton College Roll of Honour. Buried in Miraumont Communal Cemetery.

Private G/1369, 9th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment. 24th Division. Killed in action at Hooge 13th February 1916. Aged 21. Son of John & Emily Bartlett of Blandford House, Lower Compton, Devon. Born in Compton and enlisted in Petworth. Resident of Tillington. Buried in Menin Road South Cemetery, Ypres, Belgium.

Corporal 21502, C Squadron, Central Flying School, Royal Flying Corps. Killed in an accident 19th December 1917. Aged 24. Son of James & Emma Boxall of Tillington. Born in Tillington. Buried in All Hallows Churchyard, Tillington.

Arthur James

Private 92115, 11th Battalion, Sherwood Foresters (Nottinghamshire & Derbyshire Regiment). 25th Division. Killed in action near Le Cateau 24th October 1918, Aged 24. Son of Mr & Mrs James Bridger of Yew Tree Cottage, River, Lodsworth. Formerly with the RASC. Buried in Pommereuil British Cemetery

Lance Corporal P/4354, Corps of Military Police (Foot Branch) formerly G/15126, The Queen's (Royal West Surrery Regiment). Died on service in Egypt 16th August 1918. Baptised 31 January 1886 in Barkby, Leicestershire, son of John and Ann Grice. Son of Mr & Mrs John Grice of Barkby, Leicestershire. Husband of Mrs G. S. Grice of Wimbledon. Born in Barkby, resident and enlisted in Petworth but also listed as a resident of Tillington. In the 1901 census he was aged 15, born Barkby, Leicestershire, a Groom (Domestic), son of John and Ann Grice, resident Barkby Brookside, Vicarage Lane, Barkby, Barrow upon Soar, Leicestershire. In the 1911 census he was aged 25, born Barkby, Leicestershire, a Gardenerr Foreman, servant living at Coombe Cottage Gardens, Coombe Lane, Kingston-On-Thames, Coombe, Surrey. Buried in Port Said War Cemetery, Egypt.
