KENDAL, K SHOES WAR MEMORIAL

K Shoes/Somervell Brothers memorial (commemorates employees of K Shoes shoe factory), standing in the grounds of the K Shoe works, near Nether Bridge, Kendal. It takes the form of a Celtic cross made of local green slate. Inscribed on one side only with epithet and names of fallen.

In honour of the men of Nether Field Works who served in the Great War
1914 to 1918 and in undying remembrance of those here named who gave
their lives for their country

Private 15095, 8th Battalion Border Regiment. Died 31st October 1916. Aged 31 years. Son of Agnes and Thomas Chambers of Kendal Westmorland. Husband to Agnes Chambers of Kendal, Westmorland. Buried in Wimereux Communal Cemetery.
DUCKSBURY Charles
Private 34736 (Originally 24971) Enlisted 1st November 1915 aged 26 years. Address: 2 Beech Hill Cottage, Kendal, Westmorland. Enlisted to the Yorkshire (Bantam) Regiment, transferred to West Riding Regiment. Height 5 feet ½ inch. Husband of Eleanor Ducksbury, married at St Thomas’ Church 1915. Posted to France 5th June 1916. Killed in action 28th September 1918.

Private 8/15130, "C" Company 8th Battalion Border Regiment. Died aged 22 years 18th May 1916. Son of Thomas and Martha Elson of Kendal, Westmorland. Buried IN8 Ecoivres Military Cemetery, Mont St Eloi, Pas de Calais, France.

Private 23585, 1st Battalion Border Regiment. Died aged 21 years 27th January 1917. Son of Thomas and Martha Elson of Kendal, Westmorland. Remembered on Pier and face 6A and 7C Thiepval Memorial.

Private 23695, 2nd Battalion Border Regiment. Died aged 22 years 5th September 1916. Son of Edward Lindley German and the Late Bridget German of 20, Yard 135, Highgate, Kendal, Westmorland. Remembered on Pier and face 6A and 7C Thiepval Memorial.

Private 64673, 3rd Company Machine Gun Regiment. Died aged 37 years 13th February 1917. Son of Harrison and Lucetta Hine of Kendal, Westmorland. Husband of Mary Agnes Hine of "Vioneycot" Natland Road, Kendal, Westmorland. Buried VG36 Heilly Station Cemetery, Mericourt-L’Abbe.
HOLMES Walter
Private 14878, 8th Battalion Border Regiment. Enlisted on 5th September 1914 aged 24 years. Killed in action 5th July 1916 aged 24 years. Son of Robert Henry and Hannah Holmes of 20 Longpool, Kendal, Westmorland. Remembered on Pier 6A and 7C Thiepval Memorial.

Private 67747, 4th Battalion Devonshire Regiment. Died aged 19 years on 30th December 1917. Son of Robert Henry and Hannah Holmes of 20 Longpool, Kendal, Westmorland. Remembered on the Chatby Memorial, Egypt.
JACKSON Herbert
Gunner 171232, 286th Siege Battery, Royal Garrison Artillery. Died aged 33 years on 27th May 1918. Son of George and Jane Jackson of Kendal, Westmorland. Buried 1233/1236 Beaurepaire French National Cemetery, Pontavert.
JOPSON Stanley
Private 24263, 8th Battalion Border Regiment. Enlisted aged 22 years on 26th February 1916. Height 5 feet 9 5/8 inches. Religion: Church of England. Killed in action 19th April 1918. Remembered on Panel 6 Ploegsteert Memorial.
MACKERETH John
Private 35653, 2nd/ 6th Battalion Royal Warwickshire Regiment. Died aged 19 years on 24th October 1918. Son of Richard and Ann Mackereth of 10 Millwards Yard, 88 Stricklandgate, Kendal, Westmorland. Buried A7 Crucifix Cemetery, Vendegies-sur- ecaillon.
