LIEUT.
P. G. H. HUNT KILLED IN ACTION.
The
news of the death in action of Lieutenant Peicival George Havelock
Hunt, only son of Mr. George Havelock Hunt, of Albany House,
was received with deep regret in Chippenham and Calne, where
he was held in much respect. The intelligence was conveyed to
the deceasea’s sister in London by a brother officer who
immediately after the action returned from France prior to proceeding
to India. It appears that in an engagement on Friday last Lieut.
Hunt was directing the fire of the battery of which he was in
command, when he was struck on the head with a shell and killed
instantly. On receiving the news Miss Hunt came home, and informed
her father, and his painful task it was to communicate it to
his wife, who was devoted to her only son. Before the war Lieut
Hunt was a member of the Territorials and served four years
in the Calne detachment of the R.AM.C. In December 1914 he joined
the 4th Wilts and was subsequently transferred to the 8th Battalion,
with which he went to Bovington camp for training. His general
intelligence and knowledge, of military duties marked him out
for promotion; he attained the rank of Sergeant-Major, and about
18 months ago was given a commission and was transferred to
another reglment, which he accompanied to France. Since then
he had taken part in many engagements. He was wounded at the
beginning of the year, but remained in France. Last summer he
was invalided home, and on his health being restored he returned
to duty: soon after that he was promoted Lieutenant. The blow
is a severe one to his parents with whom there is widespread
sympathy. The deceased, who was 26 years of age, assisted his
father in his business, and his death cuts short what promised
to be a successful career. He had business capabilities above
the average, and shortly after he came of age he had the entire
management and control of a large undertaking at Bristol. His
death adds another to the lengthening list of old boys of the
Calne County Secondary School, who have made the great sacrifice.

CAPTAIN
E. S. WILSON.
Only
a fortnight ago we recorded the death of Captain Wilson, youngest
son of Dr. and Mrs. Wilson, of St. Mary Street, Chippenham,
? we now regret to record that they have sustained a further
bereavement by the loss at the front of another son, Captain
Evelyn Wilson, of the 2nd East Yorks Regiment. Deceased who
was 22 years of age, was educated at St. Peter’s School,
Weston-super-Mare, and Marlborough College, later going to Sandhurst.
After his military training at Sandhurst he entered the regiment
named, and after spending a time in Yorkshire went to India
with his regiment, where he remained two years, returning in
December last with his Battalion, as lieutenant. On arriving
in England he was invalided for a time, and later took charge
of a larbge camp in Yorkshire, leaving in June last with the
rank of captain to join his Battalion in France. He was a keen
cricketer and footballer, and during his college days played
for the Marlborough College eleven. As early as six years of
age he followed on his pony the Beaufort Hounds, and among the
numerous letters which Dr. and Mrs. Wilson have received from
all parts of the country none have touched them more than the
expressions of sympathy received from members of the Hunt who
remembered the enthusiasm of the young follower of foxhunting.
The eldest son, who contracted typhoid during the military operations
in the Persian Gulf, has been invalided home, and his arrival
is expected shortly.
