OAKSEY WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information

The memorials are situated in All Saints Church, Oaksey, Wiltshire. The memorials take the form of two brass plaques with engraved dedication that commemorate seven men from the parish giving their name, rank and unit. There are five names for World War 1 and two names for World War 2.

Private 74534. 78th Company, Machine Gun Corps (Infantry). Died of pneumonia 5th December 1918, aged 26. Born in Oaksey. Son of Edwin and Ellen Ayliffe. Buried at Sofia War Cemetery, Bulgaria. Plot III. C. 1.
HIGGS William James
Able Seaman R/1674. Anson Battalion, Royal Naval Division. Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve. Died 25th August 1918, aged 20. Born in Little Coxwell, Berkshire. Son of Robert and Caroline Higgs, of Oaksey. Buried at Bucquoy Communal Cemetery Extension, Pas de Calais, France. Plot B. 11.
JAMES William Henry
Private 22768. 6th Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment. Died 2nd July 1916, aged 20. No known grave. Son of Samuel and Mary James, of South View, Brinkworth, Wiltshire. Commemorated at Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France. Pier and face 13. A.
JENNINGS John
Private 17293. "A" Company, 10th Battalion Gloucestershire Regiment. Died 23rd July 1916, aged 27. No known grave. Son of Markwell and Emma Jennings, of Church Farm, Oaksey. Commemorated at Thiepval Memorial, Somme, France.
LEYFIELD Albert Victor
Private 35740. "D" Company, 2nd Battalion, Wiltshire Regiment. Died of wounds 22nd October 1918, aged 20. Son of Henry James and Dinah Leyfield, of Oaksey. Buried at Delsaux Farm Cemetery, Beugny, Pas de Calais, France. Plot I. H. 13.

STOCKLEY Ralph Capel
Lieutenant Colonel 34921. Royal Northumberland Fusiliers. Commanding 3rd Battalion, Monmouthshire Regiment. Died 30th November 1944, aged 37. Born in India. Son of Brigadier General Hugh Roderick Stockley, C.I.E., Royal Engineers, and of Edith Beatrice Stockley (nee Capel), of Oaksey. Husband of Pamela Katherine Stockley (nee Egerton), of Englefield Green, Egham, Surrey. Buried at Groesbeek Canadian War Cemetery, Gelderland, Netherlands. Plot XII. H. 8.
