DEWSBURY (SOUTH AFRICAN) BOER WAR MEMORIAL

Detailed information for Boer War
Compiled and Copyright © Tim Bickerdike 2009

There is a Dewsbury Boer War Memorial, located in Crow's Nest Park, Dewsbury, to the men of the Auxiliary and St. John Ambulance Brigade who fell in South Africa 1899-1902 from Dewsbury and District. It takes the form of a two-stepped, square, base surmounted by plinth, pedestal and figure of a serviceman standing in the “present arms” position with the inscription on bronze plaques attached to the sides of the pedestal. Each face carries a coat of arms, the Dewsbury coat of arms is on the south-east face; the 3rd Battalion, 11th (Yorkshire Dragoons) Company, Imperial Yeomanry, Imperial Yeomanry insignia is on the north-east face; the King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry badge is on the north-west face; the St. John Ambulance badge is on the south-west face. The statute of the serviceman is seen wearing a slouch hat, tunic jacket and trousers with puttees, with his rifle held in the advance position. He has a full bandolier, rolled up blanket attached behind his waist, a small packet suspended at his left side and a water bottle on his right. Of the 121 names listed 114 served and returned home and seven made the ultimate sacrifice. The memorial was unveiled 27th October 1906 by Major-General R S Baden Powell; the memorial was built by Elkington. The statue was allegedly modelled on a Dewsbury man who served in the campaign, Leonard Crane. He was subsequently killed in World War 1 in October 1916, aged 36. The names here, although they appear by Regiment/service on the memorial, have been sorted into alphabetical order for ease of research and reading.
