EAST GILLING WAR MEMORIAL

The memorial takes the form of an entrance arch to the Holy Cross Parish church. The arch is made from stone with the inscription on the lintel over the arch, the name plaques are on the left and right of the entrance. A gate stands in the archway and steps rise up towards the church as the archway is passed through. There are 13 names for World War 1.

Acting Corporal 417, 18th Sanitary Section (Territorial Force), Royal Army Medical Corps. Died at gallipoli 8th October 1915. Aged 47. Enlisted Chelsea, London S.W., resident Huntingdon. Son of the late Rev. Louis and Harriet Borissow. Born at Buckingham. Buried in EAST MUDROS MILITARY CEMETERY, Lemnos, Greece. Plot III. Row A. Grave 24.

Private 7505, 4th Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment). Killed in action 27th September 1916. Born Derby, enlisted Malton. No known grave. Commemorated on THIEPVAL MEMORIAL, Somme, France. Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D.

Private 2793, 5th Battalion, Alexandra, Princess of Wales's Own (Yorkshire Regiment). Killed in action 28th April 1915, Aged 20. Enlisted Malton, resident Wooton Bassett, Wiltshire. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Church, of Greenway, Tockenham, Wootton Bassett, Wilts. No known grave. Commemorated on YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL, Ieper, West-Vlaanderen, Belgium. Panel 33.

Charter, of West End, Kirkby Moorside, Yorks, and the late John Charter. Buried in RUMAUCOURT COMMUNAL CEMETERY, Pas de Calais, France. Grave 76.

Royal Field Artillery probably Ernest William CLARK, Gunner 34567, "D" Battery, 67th brigade, Royal Field Artillery. Died of wounds in Salonika 20th May 1917. Aged 23. Born and enlisted Malton. Son of William and Ruth Clark, of Skewsby, Terrington, York. Buried in STRUMA MILITARY CEMETERY, Greece. Plot IX. Row E. Grave 7.
