The Fylingdales war memorial can be found in the grounds of St Stephens Church, Fylingdales, Scarborough, North Yorkshire. It takes the form of a stone cross surmounting a tapering stone plinth, with carved lettering in the plinth bearing the names of the fallen and an inscription carved into the shaft. An additional plaque has been added bearing the names of the World War 2 dead, there is also carving on the head and shaft of the cross as well as on the shaft, the latter includes a depiction of St George and St Stephen.

The following information supplied by John Hanson:

He was born in 1886, died on 24 Oct 1916 at sea - SS Framfield - struck mine 3 miles North-East of Harwich, aged 30, and was buried in St. Stephens New Church, Fylingdales, Yorkshire, England, Great Britain.'

Burial Notes: Sacred to the memory of Sampson Estill Clark, Master Mariner, the dearly beloved husband of Mary Jane Clark, who lost his life by the thundering of the steamer Framfield of London on October 24th 1916, aged 29 years,

"Hasten thy Kingdom.
Also of Sampson Estill, their beloved son died 2nd September 1917 aged 1 year and 8 months and of Mary Jane Clark died April 22nd 1936, aged 48 years.

Noted events in his life were:

• He worked as a Master Mariner in 1912.

• Death: 24 Oct 1916. On October 24th, 1916, Framfield, on a voyage from Port Kelah to Middlesbrough with a cargo of iron ore, was sunk by a mine from the German submarine UC-11 (Max Schnitz), 3 miles northeast from the Sunk light-vessel. 6 persons were lost.
