Nubian a British Tribal Class Destroyer part of the 6th Flotilla
and Dover patrols was involved in a night action on 27 October 1916.
When German Destroyers attacked shipping in the English Channel
in the Straight of Dover. She tried to ram a German Destroyer but
had her bow blown off by a torpedo. She was laid Down in 1909. After
the action her stern was combined with the bow of HMS Zulu and renamed
HMS Zubian. A

post, capturing two guns and 12 prisoners. Later in the morning
he jumped into a German trench calling 'Come on boys!' to the other
members of his platoon. He killed two Germans before he himself
was killed" |

at the Battle of the Ancre 13th November 1916. Aged 27. Born Kilnhurst,
enlisted Doncaster, resident Thurnow. He was a miner and worked
at Hinkley Main and played for them at Football. He was subsequently
signed by Birmingham City FC and later moved to Mansfield or Chesterfield
FC. At the outbreak of war The Football League was suspended and
Pals Regiments were formed, the Footballers' Pals Regiment was the
17th Battalion of the Middlesex Regiment and Joe became a CSM. He
had two other brothers who enlisted and one also died on the Somme
and is commenorated on the Thiepval Memorial and the other was gassed
somewhere and returned to England and died at a later date. He was
Mentioned in Despatches (MiD). Son of Benjamin and Maria Smith,
of Swinton, Rotherham; husband of Mrs. F. Morrell (formerly Smith),
of 22, Roman St., Thurnscoe East, Rotherham. In 1911 he was living
with his brother-in-law Thomas Reader and his wife Ann, his brothers
Isaiah and James and his sister Christiana; he was 21, a Colliery
Dayman underground, born Kilnhurst, living at 139 Queen Street,
Swinton. Buried in SERRE ROAD CEMETERY No.1, Pas de Calais, France.

49 Squadron was a Lancaster Squadron based at RAF Fiskerton in October
1944. He was an Air Gunner with 49 Sqn Lancaster MKIII PB353 EA-E:
op Bremen 6-7 October 1944: crew of F/O K Harrop: took off from
RAF Fiskerton 17.24. Presumed lost over the Baltic. Six have no
known grave but the body of Sgt EA Russell RCAF was washed ashore
and laid to rest on 11 December 1944 in Risor Civil Cemetery, Norway.
At 36, Sgt Hodgkinson was over the age normally associated with
airmen flying with Bomber Command. |

South Yorkshire. Died 14 October 1941 aged 26. Buried at Heverlee
War Cemetery, Belgium.
On the night of 14 October 1941. 207 Squadron Manchester I LM7321
EM-D target Cologne Railway Station took off from RAF Waddington.
It was held in searchlight beams over Liege. It was shot down by
a Me110C night fighter (Oberleutnant Heinrich Griese, 1./NJG1 based
at St Trond). The attack was devastating, only two managing to bale
out before the aircraft crashed and exploded at Horion-Hozemont,
4km east of Comblain-au-Pont and 17km south of Liege, Belgium at
0444 local time. Those who died are buried in Heverlee War Cemetery.
P/O Unsworth was awarded his DFM for services on 49 Squadron.
Dr Robert Kirby, an Honorary member of our 207 Squadron Association,
wrote the book AVRO MANCHESTER - THE LEGEND BEHIND THE LANCASTER.
