The Swinton War memorial was unveiled on the 11th September 1921 by the Earl Fitzwilliam of Ireland, and dedicated by the Bishop of Sheffield on the same day. It cost £1,300 and the money was raised by public sponsorship, the land was given free by the Earl Fitzwilliam of Ireland. It was designed by the architect Sir Reginald Blomfield and built by Messrs Tyas and Guest, builders. The memorial was to be unveiled in June 1921 but owing to unknown problems at the local colliery it had to be postponed until September 1921. The names include Lance Corporal T N Jackson of the Coldstream Guards who won a Victoria Croos (V.C.) in action at Canal du Nord, Graincourt, France on 27th November 1918.

"27 September 1918 - He volunteered to follow his company commander (Captain FRISBY) across a canal near Graincourt in an attack on an enemey machine-gun post. Under point-blank fire, they climbed down the barbed-wire-festooned sides of the canal and rushed the post, capturing two guns and 12 prisoners. Later in the morning he jumped into a German trench calling 'Come on boys!' to the other members of his platoon. He killed two Germans before he himself was killed"
