ALDWORTH, WILLIAM, Capt. (Acting Major), Essex Regt. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in clearing a village of a strong force of the enemy. He himself led an attack on a group of houses strongly held by the enemy, who were supported by machine-gun fire. He had only 17 men, and the operation was successful, resulting in the capture of 60 of the enemy and three machine guns. It was entirely due to his great skill and gallantry and splendid courage that the village was cleared.
