War Memorial. In presence of a great gathering of townspeople and visitors from the surrounding district the war memorial erected on Troon Esplanade was unveiled on Sunday afternoon by Brigadier-General Walker, C.M.G., D.S.O., T.D. The memorial is in the form of a bronze statue of Britannia on a granite pedestal. Bronze panels are placed on the side of the pedestal containing the 177 names of the fallen, and the front of the pedestal bears the dedication inscription—"This statue was placed to commemorate the men of Troon, who, seeking the welfare of their country, gave their lives in so doing, and are now resting in and beyond the seas." The sculptor was Mr Walter Gilbert, Birmingham. Heavy rain fell during the greater part of the proceedings. Among those present were Brigadier-General James W. Walker, C.M.G., D.S.O., T.D. and Mrs Walker, the Marquis and Marchioness of Ailsa, Lord and Lady Glenarthur, Sir Alexander Walker, K.B.E., and Lady Walker, Sir John L Baird, Mr J. Harling Turner, Colonel G. Findlay; Major A. R. Crawford, R.F.A., Lieutenant-Colonel R. W. M'Lauchlan. R.S.F., Lieutenant-Colonel R. W. Paton, R.S.F., Captain Beake, Lieutenants J. Kellie and D. Wallace, Lieutenant T. M. Lawrie, in command of a company of the Royal Scots Fusiliers; members of the Town Council and officials, members of the War Memorial Committee, Troon Ex-Service Men's Federation, V.A.D. Nurses and Men's Detachment, Boys' Brigade, Girl Guides and Boy Scouts. The proceedings were opened by the playing of Handel's "Largo” and Chopin's Funeral March, by Troon Burgh Band. Following the singing of the 46th Psalm. “God is our refuge and our strength." led by the combined choirs of the town, under Mr W. L. Dietrich, Provost Andrew -Johnston said Troon suffered heavily in the war. To the bereaved and sorrowing they offered their sincere sympathy, and they hoped they would be upheld and comforted in the loss they had sustained. They felt honoured that the 17th H.L.I. (Glasgow Chamber of Commerce Battalion) was represented that day. They recalled the happy months the battalion had spent in Troon preparing for service; they knew how well they acquitted themselves on service, and they lamented the terrible losses they had sustained. Brigadier-General Walker, who was to unveil their memorial, had gained great distinction in the war, and shown his outstanding generalship in the operations in Palestine. The memorial having been unveiled by Brigadier-General Walker, assisted by Mrs. D. Moore, the Rev. Robert Smith gave the prayer of dedication. Then followed "The Flowers o' the Forest," by Troon Pipe Band, and the sounding of the "Last Post," and "Reveille." |
Brigadier-General Walker, in his address, said the beautiful memorial which had just been unveiled was not erected with any semblance, of boastfulness, but more in the humble spirit of gratitude to those who gave their all in the cause of liberty. He could bear testimony to the courage, patience and endurance of the sons of Troon. It was his good fortune to know many of the Troon lads personally, and he fought along with many of them throughout the war. No braver men left our shores to fight in the cause of liberty than their own sons. The population in Troon in 1914 was 6628. Fully 1000 men joined the ranks 648 volunteering at the outbreak of war, and 177 made the supreme sacrifice, while 212 were wounded. Surely these figures spoke volumes. He was pleased to see such a fine turnout of ex-Service men, and it was specially gratifying to them that the 17th H.L.I. Battalion, which did so well in the war and was closely associated with Troon, was taking part in the proceedings. He would like to say that Troon was second to no burgh in Scotland in its contributions to the various war charities and to its organisation of everything pertaining to the alleviation of suffering caused by the war. When the Lord Provost of Glasgow invited subscriptions for the Erskine Home no less a sum than £1390 was forwarded from Troon for the endowment of a Troon bed. Troon also had a Red Cross Hospital all through the war. Many there that day were mourning for loved ones. They extended to them their heartfelt sympathy, and asked them to regard this memorial as a permanent and grateful remembrance of deeds of valour and sacrifice. The memorial was to the glory of God and the immortal memory of those brave men whose names were inscribed on it, and they paid humble tribute of homage, respect, and reverence to the memory of those who died for the liberty of the world. Sir Alexander Walker, on behalf of the subscribers and the War Memorial Committee, gave the monument to the Provost, Magistrates, and Town Council of Troon to hold it in sacred trust for the people of Troon. Provost Johnston accepted custody of the memorial in name of the Town Council. The hymn: “O God, our help in ages past" was sung after which the Rev. William Johnston pronounced the benediction, which was followed by the singing of the National Anthem. Afterwards a large number of wreaths were placed on the memorial, the Marquis of Ailsa placing the one from the Ailsa Shipbuilding Company. In addition to wreaths from almost all the organisations represented in the parade there were tributes from the 17th H.L.I. and Loans and district ex-Service men. |
