World
War1&2- Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and Copyright © Martin Edwards2025
and John M THain
The
Buckie memorial is located in the Town Square, Cluny Square, Buckie.
Originally located in Banffshire the town is now classed as being
in Banffshire but as the memorial here are listed as they were before
1929 reorganisation it is in Banffshire. The memorial takes the
form of a centotaph topped by statues of a soldier and sailor carrying
a flag; the statues are of a kneeling Royal Navy Reservist with
standing bareheaded Gordon Highlander behind him, bearing a colour;
the burgh arms are on the front face. Plaques are affixed to the
memorial that bear the names of the fallen. The memorial was first
unveiled 12 April 1925 by Lt-Col J. Dawson, D.S.O. and then unveiled
again by Provost Dr. Peter Reid. 8 November 1953. There are 227
names for World War 1 listed by surname, initials or forenames,
service, decorations in service and the surname order. There are
130 names for servicemen and civilians for World War 2 listed listed
by surname, initials of forenames, service in service then surname
order. The memorial bears in total 357 names. There is also an additional
memorial at the foot of the memorial commemorating George McIntosh
a V.C. Holder from Buckie. The names here have been sorted into
alphabetical order within conflict for the ease of reading and research.
These will appear in sections linked from here. The memorial was
restored in 2023 and an
article appeared in The Northern Scot16 August 2023. All World
War 2 names belonging to the Royal Naval Reserve are listed on memorial
as Royal Navy.

George
McIntosh Citation from The London Gazette: 4 September 1917,
Supplelment: 30272Page: 9261
No.265579 Pte. George Mclntosh, Gord. Highrs. (Buckie., Banffshire).
For most conspicuous bravery when, during the consolidation of a position, his Company came under machine gun fire at
close range.
Pte. Mclntosh immediately rushed forward under heavy fire,
and, reaching the emplacement, he threw a Mill's Grenade into
it, killing two of the enemy and wounding a third. Subsequently,
entering the dug-out, he found two light machine guns, which
he carried back with him.
His quick grasp of the situation and the utter' fearlessness
and rapidity with which he acted, undoubtedly saved many of
his comrades and enabled the consolidation to proceed unhindered
by machine gun fire. Throughout the day the cheerfulness and
courage of Pte. Mclntosh was indomitable, and to his fine
example, in a great measure, was due fine example, in a great
measure, was due the success which attended his Company.

From
"Distinguished Conduct Medal 1914-1920 - Gordon Highlanders"
266011 Sjt. O. SIMPSON (Keith)
For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty.
When his company was scattered by hostile shell fire at its
position of assembly, he, with admirable coolness, collected
and reformed the men in the assembly position. But for his enterprise
and resource at this period the whole advance would have been
seriously hampered.
Later, when one platoon was held up bat a machine-gun he, going
forward alone without hesitation, bombed the team and captured
the gun. His great courage and general conduct were worthy of
the highest praise. (23.3.18)
