Hello,

I've just returned from a visit to Longue in France where my family attended a service for airmen who had died when their plane crashed just outside the village.

There is an immaculately kept memorial in memory of the five men who died in the crash, two survived and were helped by the young woman who lived in the farm next to the crash site (she still lives there and we were privileged to meet her).

The service was attended by around 100 local people and a few from England (Calverton twinning assocoation). It was moving to see so many people remembering those who died in the war.

The aircraft was a Halifax V from 138 squadron with markings LL289 NF-P and had been dropping supplies to the french resistance. I was informed that the plane was hit in the port wing engines by ack ack fire as it was returning over Saumur. 10 miles later it crashed in the field outside Longue. The tail section broke off and the tail gunner survived. The port wing also broke off and a gunner escaped through the hole in the wreckage. The rest of the crew died in the fire / crash.

The lady from the farm helped the two survivors until they were taken away by the Germans. I understand that one man still survives today.

The five crew are buried in the local cemetry in Longue, they are:

RAF
Sgt DA Page
F/O D Hargreaves
F/S AH Dickel

RAAF
F/O DA Hayman
F/O JC Fardon

It was a moving ceremony and it made you feel good to know that men who died so far from home are not forgotten and are remembered by the local people.

Regards

Alistair Thomson

26/27 November 1944 - 161 Squadron - Hudson T9463 - MA-L
Crashed on the south-east border of Belgium and Luxembourg at Houffalize, East Belgium. Operation FLECKNEY 1, Germany.

Article roughly translated from a French newspaper kindly supplied by Paul Remy:

On Sunday, November 26, 1944, at 2048h, a Lockheed-Hudson bomber of the 161e flotilla took off from the English aerodrome of Tempsford. On board were 4 members of crew: Wilkinson, the pilot, Weddell the navigator, the radio operator, Champion, and Ash, the machine gunner. Their mission was to parachute an intelligence agent, Paul Penczock, alias Paul Woderski, behind the enemy lines close to the town of Arnstadt in Germany. On its return, towards 0200h in the morning, the bomber was flying to the North-East of Houffalize when it unfortunately crashed in a meadow near to “Drogny”, 1 km to the south of Brisy. The bodies were buried in the military cemetery of Evère, close to Brussels. With the assistance of the municipal authorities of Gouvy, a memorial with their memory has been set up on a rock headland along the road between Brisy and Cetturu. This memorial points out the bad times to us which we should remember if we want to build a better future.
