of the liver 2 May 1902 at Springfontein. Aged 22. Eldest son of
Thomas Archibald Wood, Esq., of Eliot Park, Blackheath and Annie
Wood. [Mavis Dooner states he died 3 May 1902 and was of the Royal
Sussex Regiment whereas the memorial states differently]

Africa 1899-1902 by Mildred G Dooner, published by Naval and
Military Press
“Wood. - 2nd Lieut. Hugh Maurice Wood, 1st Batt. Royal Sussex
Regt., died of abscess of the liver at Springfontein, May 3rd, 1902.
He was the eldest son of Thomas Archibald Wood, Esq., of Eliot Park,
Blackheath, and was twenty-two years of age. He served throughout
the early stages of the war with the Cape Mounted Rifles, and from
the ranks of that corps, on the recommendation of Gen. Lord Kitchener,
was gazetted in July, 1901, to a commission in the 1st Batt. Royal
Sussex Regt., with which he served until his death.”
