CHANCELLOR HOLMES’ BEREAVEMENT.

Citizens heard on Wednesday with the deepest regret of the death of Lieut. Basil Scott Holmes, the only son of Chancellor and Mrs. Scott Holmes. It appears that the late Lieut. Holmes, who was 32 years of age, was motor-cycling in London on Tuesday evening, and when at Tooting a motor omnibus ran into the sidecar of a motor-cycle in which he was seated. He was taken to Wandsworth Hospital in a serious condition, and died during the night. These are all the details known to the present. Lieut. Holmes, who was in training with the Norfolk Regiment, was well-known in the city and district, and the deepest sympathy goes out to his widow, two young children, and his parents in their loss.—The funeral will be at noon on Saturday.

Extract from Wells Journal - Friday 10 November 1916, page 8:

THE LATE LIEUT. SCOTT HOLMES

Ald. Tate said that since their last meeting a very sad fatality had happened to Lieut. B. Scott Holmes, the only son of Chancellor and Mrs. Scott Holmes, he having been killed in Loudon in a motor accident. They all regretted to hear of his death and he moved that letters of sympathy be sent to Chancellor and Mrs. Scott Holmes and Mrs. B. Holmes expressing the Council's sympathy with them in their bereavement.

This was agreed to, all the members standing in silence.

Extract from Wells Journal - Friday 17 November 1916, page 5:

THE LATE LIEUT. HOLMES.

Chancellor Scott Holmes wrote thanking the Guardians for their kind message of sympathy and condolence in the death of his son, Lieut. Basil Scott Holmes. Mrs. Scott Holmes and he were much comforted the generous sympathy shown by the people of Wells and neighbourhood.

Mrs. Basil Scott Holmes also wrote thanking the Guardians for their letter of sympathy.
