HARSTON WAR MEMORIAL

World War 1 & 2 - Roll of Honour with detailed information
Compiled and copyright © 2000 Phil Curme

The memorial is to be found at the junction of Royston Road (A10) and Station Road, Royston Road (A10), Harston. It is unusual for 2 reasons, firstly, the date the monument was erected is specified, and secondly, the exact dates of the start and end of the war are given. The memorial takes the form of a two stepped base surmounted by a square plinth, a tapered shaft and a latin cross with an attached wreath; there is an ncised inscription on all four sides of the plinth and on faces 1 and 2 of the shaft base. The memorial was dedicated 4 April 1920. There are 11 names for World War 1 and 2 for World War 2. The names listed here for World War 1 have been sorted into alphabetical order.

Harston Man's Death.

News has been received at of the death in a hospital in France of Pte. R. Collins, of the Suffolks. In a letter to Mrs. Collins, dated April 20th, the Rev. W. E. Harper, chap lain of the hospital, says “May I sympathise deeply with you over the death from wounds of your dear son, Pte. R. Collins, of the Suffolks, in this hospital yesterday. I was with him just before the end but he did not recover consciousness and passed peacefully away to be with Christ, ‘which is far better.’ Your dear boy made the supreme sacrifice for God, King, and country. Do not sorrow as one without hope, for you and his loved ones will meet him in a better land where war is no more.” The chaplain added that he was burying Pte.
