Military Nursing Service. Died 26 November 1918. Born 1 September
1885 in Primrose Street, Alloa. Daughter of Mrs Coltman, of 47,
Ochil Street, Alloa, Scotland. In the 1901 census she was aged
15, born Alloa, Clackmannanshire, a Draper's Assistant, daughter
of Joseph and Jessie Coltman, resident Burnside House, Ochil Street,
Alloa, Clackmannanshire. Her service records show that Bessie
developed malaria on 14th April 1917 while on service at Morogora
in East Africa. A medical board on 24th June 1917 determined that
she was suffering from "debility after malaria", somewhat
anaemic, but otherwise fit. She arrived back in the UK on 11th
May 1918, and after a month's leave she was assigned to Queen's
Hospital in Sidcup. She reported there for duty on 14th June 1918,
but only served for one day, reporting sick on 15th June. Because
of "Neuralgia and debility", she was granted sick leave
until 20th July 1918 and continued until her death. Buried 30
November 1918 in ALLOA (SUNNYSIDE) CEMETERY, Clackmannanshire.
