Second Lieutenant (Pilot), 6 Training Squadron, Royal Air Force. Stalled engine attempting to turn and crashed at Montrose flying a Sopwith F.1 Camel, serial number C111, 22 May 1918. Aged 20. Born at Islay, Scotland. Son of Alfred Percy and Emily Elizabeth Waller, of Croft House, Blairlogie, Stirling formerly GleTerrace, Alloa. Buried in ALLOA (SUNNYSIDE) CEMETERY, Clackmannanshire. The Court having considered the evidence before them find that the accident was due to the pilot choking his engine and trying t0 turn back into the Aerodrome when he had lost flying speed, which resulted in his spinning into the ground. The Court find that the machine was in perfect order.

WARDLAW Alexander Gillespie aka Alex aka Alick
Ordinary Telegraphist Clyde Z/8170, H.M.S. Paxton, Royal Navy. He was board a lifeboat not spotted by rescue ship USS Wadsworth, and was left for several days before reaching land and was one of two crew who died when food and water had run out 20 May 1917. Aged 21. Born 8 July 1895. Son of James Taylor Wardlaw and Mary Hutchison Wardlaw, of 15 Coningsby Place, Alloa, Clackmannanshire. Student of Glasgow University. In the 1901 census he was aged 5, born Alloa, Clackmannanshire, a scholar, son of James and Mary Wardlaw, resident 13, Ward Street, Alloa, Clackmannanshire, Scotland. No known grave. Commemorated on PORTSMOUTH NAVAL MEMORIAL, Hampshire. Panel 28.

Extract from Alloa Journal - Saturday 23 October 1915, page 3:

DIED OF WOUNDS

Private John Wilkie White (2056),
10th Battalion Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, 72 Main Street, Sauchie. Thursday morning White received a letter informing her that husband had died of wounds in an (sic) hospital in France. The letter was written by a nurse in the hospital. It appears that Private White had been wounded in the head, and afterwards succumbed to his wound. The deceased, who was twenty-eight years of age, was a son of Mr Jas. White, Main Street, Sauchie. He was a miner, and was formerly employed at Blairhall Colliery. He enlisted on 21st August, 1914, and went to France, on 12th May. He leaves a widow and two young children.

Sailed from Halifax, Canada aboard S.S. Adriatic 31 March 1916, disembarked Liverpool 9 April 1916, then disembarked Havre 13 August 1916. Previously admitted to Bushy Park Hospital 11 May 1917 with shrapnel wounds to the Left Shoulder, discharged 25 May 1917.
